Day two of the Windows Vista
Lab took place in the conference rooms of the Radisson SAS Hotel
Amsterdam Airport, where Microsoft where accommodating all the
Windows Vista "lab 2" attendees.
Today we looked at Windows and Internet Explorer
security, Windows SideShow, Office 2007 and AMD. |
Windows Vista...
The morning kicked off with
presentation on Windows Vista Deployment
– by Mert Biyikli – Technology Architect (Microsoft Turkey). As
someone who used to manage the deployment of Microsoft based
computers in the enterprise the subject of automatic desk top roll
out certainly caught my attention.
Within the Windows Vista
timeline the idea of a more robust way of deploying desktop images
will be a reality! Microsoft are calling these new deployment
scenarios "Lite Touch" and "Zero Touch".
You can read more about the
tools and methodology here in the
Business Desktop Deployment guide.
Then it was time for the presentation on
WinFX: WPF / WCF / WWF & CardSpace by Deniz Ercoskun –
Principle Technology Specialist (Microsoft Turkey). Aimed at the
developers amongst our group this presentation dealt with the "Win
FX" vision - Enabling developers to take advantage of new
technologies and hardware advances by using a new programming model,
WinFX. You can read more about some of the core components of WinFX

Vista Lab 2
Delegates
...after a coffee break we then sat down for the presentation
entitled Microsoft Office 2007 – by
Paul Coleman – Office Senior Marketing Manager (Microsoft US).
Now Paul used to be a software developer on the Office 2007 project
before changing to a marketing role so this presentation was always
going to be different and we were not disappointed. So many changes
to come in Office 2007!
We heard Paul talk about how
the developers where given a "clean slate" for this new version of
office. No sitting down and adding new feature to existing code -
this time it was going to be written from the bottom up.
We discovered that Microsoft
had used (with permission) the habits of existing Microsoft Office
2003 users to analyse what and how they used the software. Over 1.2
billion data sessions were collected!
Now I understand why there is
such a big change to the user interface...
Heat maps in Excel 2007,
Native 3D in PowerPoint 2007, Dynamic Image Insert in Word 2007 - I
can't wait...

Next up was a presentation on
The Convergence of Advanced Hardware and
Software: Driving the Vista Experience – by Chris Aarons –
AMD Communications Manager.
One fact I learnt here was
that the Microsoft Office software development team all use
computers powered by AMD processors!
That aside Chris gave a talk
which certainly opened my eyes to AMD. I stopped using AMD based
computers a few years ago but now I going to re-evaluate that
decision...
AMD are really pulling out
all the stops to have AMD powered computers running Windows Vista.
AMD have just launched
AMD Live which certainly shows how serious
they are about the multimedia experience and with the knowledge that
there will be AMD Quad Core processors available in 2007 - that are
optimized to run Windows Vista - Intel have certainly got some very
serious competition.
One nice surprise was that
Chris bought along one of the only available ACER 5000 laptops ever
to be seen in public ahead of their release on the 27th June. This
laptop was powered by the new AMD 64 Dual Core processor with a
15.4" screen and 1.3 Mega pixel web camera built-in... and was kept
in the hotel safe overnight!

After lunch (which was
great!) the first presentation was Windows
Vista Security – by Wole Moses – Regional Windows Client
Solutions (Microsoft Turkey).
Topics covered were:
- Malware Mitigation
- Data Protection
- Secure Enterprise Access
- Trustworthy Computing
Now this meeting was always
going to be a "Hot Topic" but it sadly got hijacked for the first 20
minutes by a few attendees concerned over the way Microsoft are
implementing one aspect of Windows Vista security - User Account
Control. You can read more
here. I for one am GLAD this is being implemented as it will be
a great (and automatic) defence against Malware attacks.
If you are a developer then
this Screencast on UAC is worth viewing

There was also a discussion on:
- Internet Protected Mode &
the Anti-Phishing Filter in IE7 & IE7+
more
here and
here
- Windows Defender (Anti Spyware software)
more here
- The next evolution of VPN Quarantine and Secure Access to Networks
more here
- Securing data on Vista with BitLocker
more here.

Next up it was:
Microsoft Windows SideShow – by Chad Z
Hower – (Regional Developer Advisor Microsoft Middle East &
Africa).
Now this one had me stumped for a moment... Windows SideShow? Well
it turns out to be using the .NET MicroFramework to create tiny
devices with .NET - and boy am I hooked on this.
Imagine a keyboard that can
display useful data from your computer or how about having useful
information display on laptop lid when closed, on your TV? ...the
possibilities are myriad.
Read more about Windows
SideShow
here and
here.
Chad has a Blog here:

The evening was then spent
talking "tech" at a great Belgium restaurant called
Lieve, this restaurant was decorated in Belgium Baroque -
and when I am next in
Amsterdam I will eat there again!

Conclusion
This was a great follow-up to
the Vista Lab 1 the previous July. Microsoft have made some
impressive improvements with Beta 2 of Windows Vista. Now they are
working on improving speed, compatibility and stability of the
software I really look forward to testing the RC (Release Candidate)
version when ready!
